What is Turnitin and why does it matter?
Turnitin is a powerful academic integrity and feedback tool used by institutions worldwide to support original thinking, good academic practice, and high-quality writing. At the VTDI, Turnitin is integrated directly into your myDLE courses to help students submit, review, and improve their work with confidence.
For students, Turnitin is more than a plagiarism checker. It is a learning tool that helps you understand how to use sources correctly, improve paraphrasing, and strengthen your academic writing before final submission. Seeing similarity reports early gives you the opportunity to learn, revise, and submit your best work.
For lecturers, Turnitin supports fair and consistent assessment while saving time. The integrated feedback tools make it easier to provide clear, meaningful comments, reusable feedback, and grading aligned with academic standards.
How Turnitin Works in myDLE
Turnitin is available as a Moodle assignment plugin in myDLE. When a Turnitin-enabled assignment is set up by the lecturer:
-
Students submit their work directly through myDLE.
-
Submissions are checked against a global database of academic content, web pages, and previous student work.
-
A similarity report is generated to highlight matched text and support academic review.
-
Lecturers can use built-in tools for inline comments, general feedback, rubrics, and grading.
Turnitin is designed to support learning and integrity, not to punish mistakes. Used well, it helps everyone focus on quality, originality, and academic growth.
